Questions
I let a scammer onto my computer. What should I do first?
Disconnect the computer from the internet and don't enter passwords or bank details on it. If you shared financial information, call your bank using the number on your card. Then contact us to remove their access and check the computer. You can also report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Is the pop-up saying my computer is infected real?
If it tells you to call a phone number, it's a scam. Real Microsoft error and warning messages don't include phone numbers. Close the browser, and if it won't close, restart the computer.
Do I need to buy antivirus software?
For most home computers running Windows, the Microsoft Defender protection built into Windows is enough, as long as Windows stays up to date. We'll check that it's switched on.
Will I lose my files?
Cleanup usually doesn't touch your files. If a computer is badly damaged, we explain the options and back up what we can before any bigger step.
